The California State Old Time Fiddler’s Association (CSOTFA) was created in 1969 as a nonprofit organization to promote and preserve old time fiddling as part of our country’s heritage. Over the years 12 Districts have been formed throughout the state.
District 3 was established in 1972 and includes the counties of Kern, Inyo and San Luis Obispo plus parts of Monterey and San Bernardino counties. It began in Bakersfield and was moved to Tehachapi in 1998. District 3 has worked very hard to build up its membership in order to keep old-time fiddling alive in this community. One of our goals is to get children hooked into fiddling as part of their lifestyle. Listeners and toe-tappers are encouraged to join in and cheer us on!
Members of District 3 also have a strong tradition of playing for many different community events in numerous venues. Since 2002, they have fiddled every year in City Park for the Fourth of July Pancake Breakfast. For the past five years, they have entertained shoppers in Albertson's during the Christmas season. They have also played for Farmer's Markets, serenaded hospice residents at Tehachapi Hospital, and fiddled at Tehachapi Performing Arts Center's Back Street Gallery during the monthly First Friday Art Walks.
Climaxing the year is “Fiddlin’ Down the Tracks”, our September Fiddle contest. This is the only annual certified fiddling contest held in Southern California. The grand champion of this contest is certified to compete in the National Fiddle Championships in Weiser, Idaho. Fiddlers from across the State and even around the country come to Tehachapi annually for the fiddle contest to try their skill, and with a little luck, go home with a medal and a cash prize. The contest coincides with Tehachapi’s annual Harvest Festival. In addition, the Tehachapi Quilters Guild with their beautiful quilts transform the hall into an inviting, colorful venue. Interest in fiddling is increasing in District 3, and attendance is up at all our activities.
